This workshop provides information and resources on how to teach the basics of data journalism. Topics include challenging preconceptions of data journalism, best practices for using data in journalism and motivating students to embrace the use of data in writing. Additionally, the workshop will go over the essential concepts and techniques to effectively work with data and produce compelling data-driven stories.

Mai Nguyen is a quantitative social scientist and visiting instructor in the Institute for Quantitative Theory and Methods. She previously served as the quantitative editor at FiveThirtyEight and now works as a data scientist at a software company based out of Washington D.C. Mai received her PhD from New York University and has expertise in the fields of political science and quantitative methodology.
