Teaching Archival Literacy with Zines

24 Sep

In this workshop, co-facilitated by members of the Georgia Asian American Community Archive Initiative (GAACAI), participants were invited to engage with zines as a creative teaching exercise for developing student engagement with primary sources and building archival literacy. The session highlighted materials related to the South Asian diaspora and food in Atlanta. Participants were encouraged to bring printed copies of their own favorite recipes, foods, or poetry to include in their zines.

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies doctoral candidate Shromona Mandal introduced the link between zines, archives, and reproductive justice

Zine-Making in the Kemp Malone Library.

Archival materials provided by GAACAI to use in the zines. Guiding questions included: What is the main story or message you would like to convey through your zine? Who is the target audience for your zine? What kinds of materials would you like to integrate into your zine? What roles do zines play in documenting marginalized voices and community stories?

This workshop was cosponsored by Writing Across Emory, the Center  for Faculty Development and Excellence, and the Asian American & Asian Diaspora Studies Initiative.
